CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Shinji Matou
AGE: 8
CANON: Fate/Extra

CANON HISTORY: Wiki link!
CANON PERSONALITY: The two most important things to consider about Shinji is that he is a prodigy who wants to be taken seriously, and that he is just an eight-year-old boy.

There's no denying that Shinji is a prodigy - he's the game champion of all of Asia, which is not a small place. He's a freelance cracker, and has avoided prosecution from the government that owns 60% of the entire world. He's really good, and he's aware of it. Part of the reason why he uses a teenage avatar is just to be taken seriously: even if he's a child, his virtual skills are to be reckoned with even by adults. His listed dislikes are guys who stand out more than he does; he wants to be the best, and he wants to be recognized as the best.

Shinji's goal in life is to be remembered for as long as possible, even after he's gone. He wants to win so many championships that people have to acknowledge his prowess. It's why he entered the Holy Grail War in the first place: it's just yet another championship for him to win.

Shinji's level of independence is impressive, for an eight year old, but it also gets him in trouble. No one is supervising him and keeping him from spending so much time in virtual reality that he ends up hospitalizing himself. No one stops him from entering the Grail War by telling him that it's not just a game, that he actually could die. There's no one in real life who would cry over him if he died. He definitely has no connection with his parents, no siblings, and nothing outside his virtual life.

No matter what his avatar looks like, Shinji is a child, and it puts most of his behavior in a better light than if you think he's a teenager. He's called an idiot because flattery can get him to spill details about his Servant's ability, and he's called a moron because he's arrogant and assumes he'll win: but of course he's not as smart as an adult, and of course he's prideful because he's a child. He has difficulty talking to other people as equals and treats them as lesser, because he's a child who almost never talks to people in real life. He offers the protagonist some of the prize money or a position as his lackey if they just surrender early, because he has absolutely no idea that losers die - he assumes he's going to win anyway, and the money doesn't matter to him nearly as much as the recognition does. He blames his loss on his Servant, or on the protagonist, but again: he's an elementary school child, and a prodigy who very rarely loses, so it's natural for him to be a sore loser, and it's natural for him to fall into a panic when he realizes that he's actually going to die here.

Shinji is prone to panic when things aren't going his way, and he easily falls into denial. In the sequel, after he remembers dying in the first round, he briefly aligns himself with the antagonist to try to reassure himself that he's a good Master who can't possibly have lost ever, which lasts until the antagonist nearly kills him and drives home just how powerless he is.

He has trouble actually treating people well, but he does have some tsundere positive sentiments - in the sequel, while he refuses to join the other Masters' group because it's lame and they're lame, he worries about his Servant enough to spy on their discussions of what's going on. He sacrifices himself to help the protagonist, because they cried for him when he died, and they're the only ones who would have cried for him. Even if he's childishly selfish, and a coward who'd rather not fight if he doesn't have to, he'll go as far as dying to protect an actual friend.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: -Shinji is a Spirit Hacker - magecraft is gone in his universe, but he's capable of digitizing his own soul in order to hack virtual worlds. He's really good at this, and uses it both for things like modifying his avatar and putting more treasure in the arena to cracking into protected systems for pay and altering the data in the computer system in the moon, which would lead to harsh penalties if he were caught. He's able to create extremely damaging viruses and is generally not someone you would want inside your computer system.

-He's also game champion of the entire continent of Asia, which means he's really, really good at video games.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Shinji Matou
AU AGE: 8 9
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Since Recolle takes place in the real world instead of a virtual reality (presumably), Shinji's appearance is as a child instead of a teenager. Hair is brown instead of super anime blue.

AU HISTORY: -The young son of a Japanese woman who moved to Recolle a long time ago and a fourth-generation Japanese immigrant: Sakura Tohsaka [personal profile] imaginex is his cousin through that Japanese woman, but they've never met. (permission granted by the player)
-His Tohsaka parent comes from old money, and Shinji's ended up a little spoiled as an only child.
-He's very intelligent, which combines with the spoiling and him being an eight year old to end up with him being a little bit of a brat.
-He likes video games and is very good at them, but his parents don't let him play anything inappropriate for his age :< Is probably one of the best Splatoon players in Recolle.
-Has definitely told someone to git gud scrub.
-Does very well in school and is reasonably popular among kids his age - he's one of the larger personalities in third grade and has a small circle of close friends.
-Has been known to do kids' homework for them for money. Look, sometimes you don't want to ask your parents every time you want candy, okay?
AU PERSONALITY: Shinji has a much closer relationship with his parents - read 'any relationship at all' - and their supervision has settled him down some. He's still intelligent for his age, for sure, but he isn't occupying his intellect by hacking into government databases or trying to become continent game champion. He's a fairly normal, if bratty and spoiled, child, and he has regular pursuits for an eight year old.

He's also much better-adjusted as a result of actually talking to other people in real life and not pretending to be a teenager instead of a child. He's learned some social skills and can get along with kids his age if he wants to, and he comes across as much more likable when you know that he's a kid rather than a really childish teen. He doesn't have as much of a drive to be Remembered Forever now that he has friends and a loving family instead of only the internet.

Also, he hasn't had to deal with remembering that he died yet, so that's a plus for happiness and mental stability.
